Recovering from Relapses
Question:
My question relates to the difficulties encountered in the recovery
process...namely relapse. I have suffered from anorexia for more
than 15 years. Have been in treatment for almost 12 years - been
through the inpatient treatment on 4 different occasions...and am
still struggling tremendously! It's been over a year since my last
inpatient admission. I know that it's normal to feel stuck at times,
but it's still very frustrating. So...my question is how does someone
who is so stuck in their anorexia, get unstuck??
Answer:I am sorry to hear how hard your struggle is at the moment and
I wish I could give you an answer as to exactly how to get unstuck
from anorexia. Recovery from anorexia can take a very long time,
and as you mention, typically does involve relapses. The process
is so complex, and so individual that I could not possibly know
what will work for you, yet I can say that there is hope, recovery
is possible and you and your life are worth the effort of continuing
to battle anorexia.
It sounds as though you are in therapy. I am guessing you are referring
to individual therapy. Perhaps adding a group would help. I hope
you are talking with your therapist, who knows you as an individual,
about what has gotten you stuck and what you need to be doing to
resume your journey of recovery.
I can only offer this idea: take some time to think deeply about
what you want in life and how you really want your life to be. My
hope is that focusing on your true goals will somehow add motivation
to your drive for recovery and that these goals will inspire you
and give you the strength to do some of the hard things you need
to do to make progress toward health.
Good luck pursuing your recovery and your dreams.
