Friend With Bulimia
Question:
My roommate (and close friend) has bulimia and is trying really
hard to deal with it and change. Even though she wants to get better,
it is really stressful to live with someone in the middle of an
eating disorder and I'm afraid it is wrecking our relationship.
I want to help her in any way I can but I'm not sure what to do.
Answer:
It sounds like you are in a painful and difficult situation. There
are things you can do to support your friend in addressing her eating
problems but ultimately the responsibility for change and recovery
is hers.
Here are some of the things you can do to help your friend:
Learn more about eating disorders so that you will be more aware
of issues and warning signs.
Listen to your friend, ask about her feelings.
Talk about your concerns for her and your feelings as you see her
struggling with bulimia.
And most importantly, suggest that she get professional help.
Sadly, it may take time for your friend to be able to use your
help and support. You can be a good example by looking for a support
group in your area for the loved ones of people struggling with
eating disorders. Good luck.
