Symptoms Worse When Things are Great

Question:

I know that I am bulimic. I have been for about 15 years..the thing is that I am afraid to deal with the issues that may have caused it..............I do it mostly when things are great in my life and everyone likes me..that's when I feel that I have no control or that at any minute I may loose control.........what can I do??????

Answer:

I am impressed that you have already made important steps in fighting bulimia. You are able to identify some of your feelings (fear, loss of control), possible causes of your problems, and times when you are most symptomatic (when things are great).

It sounds as though your next steps will involve learning how to tolerate the vulnerablility and uncertainty you experience when you feel liked and successful. Also you will probably need to find ways to deal with the things which may have caused your bulimia.

Have you ever been in therapy? It can make such a difference to have someone there for you, to guide, encourage and help you as you do the very hard work of exploring your fears and other issues. I recommend that you find a psychotherapist who specializes in eating disorders to facilitate your growth process. Try The Renfrew Center (1-800-RENFREW) or Treatment Locator Service--Online Psych for referrals to someone in your area. I think you'll find it's worth it to invest in therapy so that you can begin to more fully enjoy the good things in your life.
