I Suffer From Bulimia
Question:
I am well aware that I suffer from bulimia and have been for the
past 7 years. I have decided to finally seek help, but the waiting
lists are herendous. Is there anything I can do now to overcome
this? This obsession has been such a big part of my life, that I
couldn't even stop now if I wanted too. In fact, I have added diet
pills and alcohol to my situation. What can I do while I wait for
proper help?
Thank you,
Stranded
Answer:
You have made the first important steps in recovery in acknowledging
that you have bulimia and reaching out for professional help. In
addition to the resources you have already contacted, you may want
to check Treatment
Locator for other local therapists, or Eating Disorders Organizations
to identify a local eating disorder specialist. I hope you are able
to find an experienced therapist that you feel comfortable working
with ASAP.
Diet pills and alcohol can be dangerous and will not help your
bulimia or your situation. It may be helpful to find and attend
AA meetings in your area. AA meetings can provide emotional support
and help you begin to understand your issues with alcohol and/or
drugs.
In the meantime, I have two other suggestions:
Reach out to people in your life. Think of one or two people you
know care about you, and let them know what you are struggling with.
This is often difficult, but developing supportive relationships
can make a real difference. You may have to help the other person
learn what kinds of support you need by giving feedback about what
is and isn't helpful to you, but over time, this can prove to be
a valuable investment.
Read about bulimia and eating disorders. Check our booklist. Specific
titles that come to mind for you are:
Surviving an Eating Disorder: Strategies for Family and Friends,
by Judith Brisman and Michelle Siegel, Harper Collins, 1988.
Bulimia: A Guide to Recovery, by Lindsey Hall, Gurze Books, 1992.
Do persist in your efforts to deal with your bulimia in spite of
delays and setbacks. You are worth it.
